Surbiton High Young Enterprise team through to Area Finals - 04/05/2010

Congratulations to our Young Enterprise team, Infinity, who qualified for the Richmond and Kingston Area Final held on Thursday, 29th April at Surbiton High School. The company was set up in September 2009, comprising 12 students from the Lower Sixth Form at Surbiton High School.

Infinity's product is a series of educational mouse mats which show information, tips, codes and formulae that people need regularly but somehow can't quite remember.  So far, to pilot the market, the team have produced four designs, one each for ICT, Maths, English and Chemistry.

The team raised funds to invest in the purchase of mouse mats by running a successful school disco, through sales of other products and by issuing shares. They then sourced the first batch of mats from Vistaprint, an online supplier of promotional materials.

The team has learned a number of lessons along the way about the designs, the importance of targeting and the need to take all costs into account including delivery charges.  Their future plans include pursuing leads with primary schools, secondary schools outside the borough, businesses and the National Trust.  They also intend to set up a website to raise awareness and credibility.

Jenny, Managing Director, commented, "We would particularly like to thank Miss Holman (our link teacher) and David Cane (our business advisor) and the Kingston Chamber of Commerce for giving advice and providing such a valuable opportunity. We are excited to be through to the Area Finals."

Congratulations also go to all our YE companies this year. To Vibe for their innovative and creative hair bands and to Illuminate for an exceptional calendar and series of contemporary photography shoots. The profile of enterprise has risen significantly this year across the whole school, and we look forward to next year's Sixth Form initiatives.

Anyone interested in supporting Young Enterprise as a Link Advisor should contact Mr Ian Smith and consult the YE website for details.
