Surbiton High Gymnasts take Gold - 10/02/2012

Our Senior Gymnasts were in action last weekend at the Regional Floor and Vault Competition, where gymnasts from schools in the London Region competed for the prestigious title of 'Regional Champions' and the opportunity to compete at the 2012 National Finals.
The Surbiton U19 Squad of Danusia Francis, Laura Mitchell, Loriah James, Jojo Perryman, Amy Mackenzie and Anne-Marie Seabourne (with Nicole Hibbert as Assistant Coach) had been perfecting their vaulting and floor routines at School and were ready to compete against the best gymnasts in the London Region.
Approaching the competition very professionally, our girls proved to be in a class of their own, exhibiting great control and finesse as they performed very neatly executed vaults. However, it was on the floor where our gymnasts shone, demonstrating elegance and agility in their individually choreographed routines, each being rewarded by rapturous applause from the audience. Danusia performed a stunning floor routine, oozing personality and showing just why she is training as part of the 2012 Olympic Squad. Her near perfect score of 9.85 was the highest of the competition, with all Surbiton girls scoring above 9.40 on floor.
The final scores put the Surbiton High Gymnasts well ahead of their nearest rivals. In the world of Gymnastics, where a competition can be won or lost by 0.001, this is an outstanding achievement. It was a real honour for our girls to be asked to present medals to the younger age groups on the podium and also sign autographs for other aspiring gymnasts! We were then presented with Gold Medals and a trophy and will represent Surbiton High School and the London Region at the National Finals in May.
This is now a very busy term on the Gymnastics calendar. Miss Yellop is extremely proud of the U19 Squad's achievements so far this year and wishes all the Gym teams every success in their forthcoming competitions.
