Bormio Italy 12-17th February 2017
The 21st English Alpine Championships were recently held in Bormio, featuring 400 of the country’s most talented skiers, many of whom are based in the Alps and train with top British Clubs Ambition, Evolution and BSA for the season. Surbiton High School Ski Club members Georgina 11C, Kate 11A, Ellen 9P, Tilly 8T, and Toby Y6 Boys Prep, raced in the red colours of local Esher club, Sandown Park Ski Race Club on this fantastic occasion.
The Championships kicked off on Saturday evening with a parade of all participating British Clubs and athletes through the town. A welcome address by the Mayor of Bormio and the Head of Snow Sport England, Tim Fawke, was given in the main square and a special ‘good luck’ video from Dave Ryding, who was skiing in St Moritz preparing for the World Championship slalom, was shown.
Sunday marked the start of six days of beautiful sunny weather and excellent skiing conditions on the famous Stella Alpina Piste. The week included racing from U10s to FIS U21 in Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super G, mix combi races and a very exciting Team Parallel Night Slalom between all participating clubs, which was won by Glasgow Ski Racing with runners up, Ambition A team.
Toby achieved a fantastic position of 14th overall after day 1 in the U12 Boys’ Slalom, and 19th in the combined U10 & 12 Combi race. Monday saw Kate and Georgina turn out two solid slalom performances in the highly competitive U16 Slalom race. Ellen finished 24th in the U14 Girls’ Slalom, closely followed by Tilly. Tilly continued the week with impressive results in both Tuesday’s GS race, and her first ever Super G race on Friday. Well done Tilly!
On Thursday, the U16 GS Championships saw Kate and Georgina finish in an impressive 21st and 22nd position. More super results followed on Friday in the U16 Super-G race. Consistent performances throughout the week in all disciplines paid off for the girls, giving them very respectable English Championship overall places of Kate in 24th, Georgina in 26th, Ellen in 34th and Tilly in 36th respectively.
Other well-known former Surbiton High School athletes participating in the English Championships were Darcie Mead, Amber Buckland and the impressive family duo of Mrs Deighton, Surbiton High School staff member, and her son Harry. Darcie put down two impressive runs in Thursday's Women’s NJR GS, finishing 4th overall in the international field, and clocking the fastest British time, therefore taking the win, the gold medal and the title in the FIS U21 GS.
The final day of racing in Bormio saw Harry Deighton take 3rd place in the U18 FIS GS English Championships. It was also another exciting day in the Ladies’ English GS Champs with Jess Anderson just pipping Darcie Mead to the post over two runs to take the win in the Under 21 category and claim the Ladies’ English GS crown leaving Darcie in silver medal position.
Well done to all Surbiton High School skiers, past and present, for spectacular efforts with fantastic results!
Until next year!
