Sport
Every pupil has one PE and one Games lesson a week. The Games lessons always take place at our sports grounds at Hinchley Wood. PE lessons take place in the Assembly Rooms, at Hinchley Wood or in the Sixth Form gym. PE lessons cover the following curriculum areas: Dance, Basketball, Hockey (Years 5 and 6 only), Gymnastics, Athletics and Tennis. All PE lessons are one double lesson (one hour). Games lessons last 3-4 lessons (90 mins or 2 hours). Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have their lessons in the afternoon; Reception and Years 1 and 2 have their Games lessons in the morning. Subjects covered in Games lessons are Football, Rugby and Cricket.
In addition to their Games and PE lessons, boys have a half-hour swimming lesson weekly throughout the year, from Year 1 to Year 3. Boys in Reception will start swimming lessons in the Summer Term. Groups are small and based on ability levels within age groups. During their lessons, the boys build water confidence and move from teaching based in a small, shallow learners' pool, to a full-sized 25 metre pool. Lessons are run by a specialist teaching team and follow the National Plan for Teaching Swimming and children are awarded certificates from Level 1 to 7 from this scheme, following ongoing assessments by their teachers.
On occasions throughout the year, there are opportunities for inter-house or inter-school competitions or swimming galas, which aim to boost boys' confidence and enjoyment of the sport.
