Junior Girls' and the Boys' Prep Schools
Reception assessments take place on Saturday 23 November 2013 for the Junior Girls' School and Saturday 16 November 2013 for the Boys' Preparatory School. The children are put into groups according to their birthdays, eg Autumn, Spring and Summer birthdays in separate groups, as we are aware of the difference in development that a few months can make at an early age. This method allows us to ensure that older children will be assessed together with others of a similar age and developmental stage. They are observed by several members of staff as they do simple tasks to include number and sound recognition, broadly the type they have been used to at their nursery. We do this in a very child-friendly situation with stories, toys and play equipment. Reception assessments take about 40 minutes. During this time the Head will be on hand to talk to parents over a cup of coffee.
Assessments are held for Year 3 Entry to the Junior Girls' School only and take place on Tuesday 7 January 2014. The assessments for Year 3 will involve testing in Maths and English. There are several parts to the tests, such as story writing, reading, spelling etc, and the children will be with us all morning. There will be a break mid-morning, when we offer the children a drink and a biscuit. Please ensure that you tell us of any food allergies that your child may have.
We do consider pupils for the Junior Girls' School and Boys' Prep School at any stage, depending on the availability of spaces.
Reports from Current Schools
We do contact your child's current school to request a brief confidential report on his/her academic and other achievements and his/her potential. A similar request may be made to Nurseries and Play Groups for children joining our Reception Class.
Joining Surbiton High Junior Girls' or Boys' Prep School
Following acceptance of a place in the School, your child will be invited to spend part of a morning in School with his/her new classmates in July. This will enable them to meet some teachers and perhaps make arrangements to meet some new friends during the summer holidays. Uniform will be on sale in School on this day and the Head will be able to give parents some guidance on procedures for the beginning of term.
We welcome applications from siblings of children who already attend the School. However, places are allocated on merit only.
